Why Airbus and Boeing Took Different Paths with Composites on A350 and 787

So, I was reading about how Airbus and Boeing both use carbon-fiber composites on their big jets, the A350 and 787, but they went about it in pretty different ways. Kind of wild how a similar material can lead to such different designs, right?

Airbus went with a panelized fuselage for the A350, while Boeing used these continuous composite barrels for the 787. I think Airbus did it this way because they wanted to keep some flexibility, maybe easier repairs? Boeing's approach seems more about strength and weight efficiency from what I gather.

Honestly, I'm not an engineer, but I find it fascinating how these choices impact not just the aircraft but also the operations for airlines. Like, does one method actually lead to better performance or cost savings over time? And what about maintenance?

Anyone have thoughts on why Airbus stuck with panels instead of going full barrel like Boeing? Or maybe someone knows more about how these decisions affect the airlines' bottom line? I'd love to hear more about the practical side of these design philosophies.
