Photography Challenges: Capturing Stealthy F-35 Lightning II

The F-35 Lightning II is often in the news, and for good reason. As one of the most advanced fighter jets, its cost is a hot topic among military and aviation enthusiasts alike. By 2026, the cost of the F-35 program is expected to be influenced by several factors, including the variant being purchased and whether the buying nation has been part of its development. While the fly-away cost of an F-35 can be competitive with other fighters like the F-15EX, Rafale, or Eurofighter, the sustainment costs remain a significant consideration.

For us in the aviation photography community, the F-35 presents some unique challenges and opportunities. Its stealthy design and advanced technology make it a fascinating subject to capture. However, photographing military jets like the F-35 can be tricky due to restricted access and air show limitations. Have you been lucky enough to photograph an F-35? What tips do you have for capturing fast-moving military aircraft, especially those that don't often appear at public events? Share your experiences and any interesting shots you've managed to take!
Photographing the F-35 Lightning II is indeed challenging but rewarding. I've had the chance to capture it during air shows, and timing is everything. The F-35's high speed and agility mean you need a fast shutter speed-around 1/1000s or faster-to freeze the action. Also, consider shooting in burst mode to increase your chances of getting a sharp image.

Access to military bases can be limited, but some air shows, like those at Nellis AFB (LSV) or the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford (FFD), often feature the F-35. These events provide great opportunities to photograph the jet in various flight displays. If anyone has tips on photographing it outside air shows, I'd love to hear them!
