Why the Airbus A318 is a Rare Bird Today

So, I was reading about the Airbus A318 and it's kinda wild that only four of them are still flying today. This plane was basically designed to tackle a super specific problem - handling tricky approaches at certain airports. It's got this steep-approach system that makes it perfect for places with loads of obstacles or noise restrictions.

The A318 is the baby of the A320 family. Same cockpit and fly-by-wire tech, but with a shorter body and really good short-field performance. It's like they shrunk it just for those tough airports. But, I guess that niche focus is why we don't see them much anymore.

I think it's pretty cool they built a plane specifically for handling unusual approaches, but maybe that was too narrow a focus for the market? Or maybe airlines just prefer bigger planes with more seats now for efficiency? What do you guys think? Anyone here ever flown on an A318, or seen one in action at one of those tricky airports? I'd love to hear about your experiences!
