Best Lenses for Aviation Photography: 100-400mm vs. 150-600mm

Hey everyone! I'm in the market for a new lens for aviation photography and would love some input. Currently, I'm shooting with a Canon EOS R5, and I'm deciding between the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary.

I mostly shoot at LAX (LAX) and SFO (SFO), and I'm looking for a versatile lens that can handle both close-up shots of aircraft on the tarmac and long-range shots of planes in the sky. I've heard great things about the reach of the 150-600mm, but I'm concerned about the weight and portability.

On the other hand, the 100-400mm seems like a good balance between range and size, but I wonder if I'll miss the extra reach. Has anyone used both lenses for spotting, and if so, what are your thoughts? How do they compare in terms of image quality and ease of use, especially during long days of spotting?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and any sample shots you might have taken with either lens!
I've used both the Canon RF 100-400mm and the Sigma 150-600mm for spotting at LAX, so I can share some insights. The Sigma's reach is fantastic for capturing aircraft approaching from a distance, and its image quality is impressive considering the range. However, it is quite heavy, which can be tiring during long spotting sessions. The Canon RF 100-400mm, while lacking a bit in reach, is much more portable and manageable for extended use.

For LAX and SFO, where you often have closer access to taxiways and runways, the 100-400mm might be sufficient. If you're shooting more distant subjects or want versatility for air shows, the extra reach of the 150-600mm could be valuable. Consider your typical shooting distances and stamina for carrying gear when making your choice.
The choice between the Canon RF 100-400mm and the Sigma 150-600mm largely depends on your shooting style and priorities. The Sigma's extended reach is a real advantage for capturing arrivals at LAX and SFO, especially when you're positioned further from the action. However, its weight can be tiring during long spotting sessions. On the other hand, the Canon RF 100-400mm offers easier handling and portability, which might be beneficial for spontaneity and mobility around the airport. In terms of image quality, both lenses perform well, but the Canon might edge out slightly in terms of sharpness at the shorter ranges. Have you considered how frequently you'll need the extra 200mm reach versus the convenience of a lighter setup?
