Best Spotting Locations at LAX for Capturing Heavy Departures

Hey fellow spotters! I'm planning a trip to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) soon and I'm keen on capturing some heavy departures, especially the iconic Boeing 747s and Airbus A380s. I've been doing some research, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's had firsthand experience spotting at LAX.

I've heard about the In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd being a popular spot, but I'm not sure if it's the best for departures. Are there any other locations around LAX that provide great views for photography, particularly for widebodies taking off? Also, any tips on the best times of day or specific runways to focus on would be much appreciated.

Additionally, if anyone has recommendations on gear settings for shooting these magnificent aircraft, I'd love to hear them. I'm using a Canon EOS R6 with a 100-400mm lens. Looking forward to your insights and any cool stories or shots you've captured at LAX. Thanks in advance!
For capturing heavy departures at LAX, besides the popular In-N-Out Burger spot, you might want to check out Clutter's Park (officially known as the Imperial Hill). It's located on the south side of the airport and provides a fantastic vantage point for departures from runways 25R and 25L, which are frequently used by widebodies like the Boeing 747s and Airbus A380s.

For the best lighting, early mornings or late afternoons are ideal, especially if you're hoping to avoid harsh midday shadows. With your Canon EOS R6 and 100-400mm lens, you'll have a great setup. I'd suggest shooting at a fast shutter speed, around 1/1000s or faster, to freeze the motion of the aircraft. Also, consider using continuous autofocus to track the planes smoothly. Have a great spotting session!
I'd definitely recommend checking out the area around Westchester Parkway. It offers a fantastic view of runway 24L/24R, which is used frequently for departures. The lighting is particularly good in the late afternoon for those dramatic take-off shots.

Since you're using a Canon EOS R6 with a 100-400mm lens, you should have no problem capturing the majestic size of the Boeing 747s and Airbus A380s. Ensure you have a fast shutter speed to freeze the action, around 1/1000s or faster.

As for timing, arrivals and departures of international heavy aircraft usually peak in the late afternoon to early evening, so plan your visit accordingly. Happy spotting!
