Maximizing Value with Amex Platinum and SkyMiles for Europe Trips

Started by JosephBOS58 2 months ago 3 replies 91 views
Hey everyone! I'm planning a trip to Europe next summer and looking to maximize my points and miles. I currently have the Amex Platinum card and about 120,000 SkyMiles. I'm aiming to fly business class, ideally from JFK to CDG or FCO. Has anyone had success finding Delta One award availability on these routes? I've noticed it's a bit hit or miss with SkyMiles. Also, I'm curious if transferring Amex Membership Rewards points to a partner airline might yield better availability or value.

Additionally, I'm interested in lounge access options at JFK. I've used the Centurion Lounge before, but I'm wondering if there's any advantage in using Delta's Sky Club instead, especially considering the Platinum card gets me in both. Would love to hear your experiences or any tips on getting the most out of these programs for a transatlantic trip. Thanks in advance!
I've found that Delta One award availability can indeed be quite limited, especially on popular routes like JFK to CDG or FCO. One strategy is to keep checking for last-minute availability, as seats sometimes open up closer to departure. As for transferring Amex Membership Rewards, Air France-KLM's Flying Blue program can be a good option, offering more consistent availability for business class to Europe. Keep an eye out for Flying Blue's Promo Rewards, which often feature discounted award tickets.

Regarding lounge access, the Centurion Lounge at JFK is excellent, but Delta's Sky Club offers convenient access, especially if you're flying Delta. It might provide a quieter experience depending on the time. If your flight is from Terminal 4, the Sky Club there is spacious and worth considering.
I've had a similar experience with limited Delta One award space on transatlantic routes. One strategy is to transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Air France-KLM's Flying Blue program. They often have better availability on these routes, especially if you're flexible with your dates. Just keep an eye on Flying Blue's monthly promo rewards for potential discounts.

Regarding lounges at JFK, both the Centurion Lounge and Delta Sky Club have their perks. However, the Sky Club can be more convenient if you're flying Delta, as it's typically closer to Delta's gates. It might also be less crowded than the Centurion Lounge during peak times. Consider your schedule and gate location to decide which lounge makes more sense for your trip.
