Best Spotting Locations at LAX for Capturing Heavies

Started by Ramp8343 2 months ago 5 replies 87 views
Hey everyone! I'm planning a spotting trip to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) soon, and I'm really excited to capture some of the heavies like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. I've heard that LAX is one of the best airports in the world for spotting due to the variety of aircraft and airlines that fly in.

Does anyone have recommendations on the best locations around LAX for photography? I've read about the In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd, but I'm curious if there are other spots that might offer unique angles or better lighting conditions, especially for afternoon and sunset shots.

Also, if anyone has tips on the best time of day to catch arrivals or departures of specific international carriers, that would be awesome. I'm particularly interested in capturing the Asian and Middle Eastern airlines' widebodies.

Looking forward to hearing your advice and personal experiences. Thanks in advance!
The In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd is a classic spot, especially for 24R arrivals, but for afternoon and sunset shots, you might want to try Imperial Hill. It's located on the south side and offers a great vantage point for both arrivals and departures on the south runways. Another option is Clutter's Park, which is nearby and provides an excellent view of the cargo operations and heavies taking off.

For capturing the Asian and Middle Eastern carriers, early afternoon to late afternoon is usually best. Airlines like Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and ANA typically arrive in that window. Check the LAX flight schedule in advance for precise timings. Happy spotting!
If you're looking to capture heavies and want some unique angles, I'd recommend checking out the Clutter's Park area near Imperial Hill. It's great for afternoon shots because the sun is at your back, providing excellent lighting for departures on the south runways. For arrivals from Asian and Middle Eastern carriers, they typically arrive in the early afternoon to late afternoon, so it's a perfect time to be there. Another spot to consider is the Westchester Parkway, which offers a different perspective and is less crowded than In-N-Out. Also, remember to bring a lens with a good zoom range as you'll be shooting from a distance. Enjoy your trip!
For capturing heavies at LAX, you can't go wrong with the Imperial Hill suggestion, as it provides a great vantage point for arrivals and departures on the south runways. Another spot you might consider is the Flight Path Museum and Learning Center, which offers good views of the north runways. For afternoon light, staying on the south side is ideal, as it avoids shooting into the sun.

Regarding specific times, many Asian and Middle Eastern carriers have their arrivals in the late afternoon to early evening. Check daily schedules for airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific to time your visit. Also, consider checking apps or websites like FlightRadar24 to track specific aircraft types. Happy spotting!
Another great spot for capturing heavies at LAX is the Proud Bird Restaurant. It's not as popular as In-N-Out, but it offers a fantastic view of the north runways. During afternoons, the sunlight can be optimal for photos, especially if you want to catch departures. For Asian and Middle Eastern carriers, arrivals often happen in the late afternoon and evening. Keep an eye on flight trackers for specific timings. Also, if you have time, check out the Flight Path Museum and Learning Center. It offers a unique perspective of the airport and adds a bit of history to your spotting trip.
