Hey everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my lens for aviation photography and could use some advice. Currently, I'm using a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III USM on my Canon R5, but I'm finding it a bit limiting when trying to capture aircraft details from further away, especially at larger airports like LAX or JFK. I've been considering either the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM or even a Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary lens. My main focus is on getting sharp images with great detail of aircraft on approach or during takeoff at a distance. How do these lenses compare in terms of image quality, especially at the longer end? Also, any tips on handling heat haze and stability at these focal lengths would be greatly appreciated. Would love to hear your experiences and any recommendations you might have on other lens options too. Thanks!

I've had experience with both the Canon RF 100-500mm and the Sigma 150-600mm lenses. The Canon RF 100-500mm is fantastic for maintaining sharpness across its range, and its build quality complements the Canon R5 perfectly. It's lighter and more compact than the Sigma, which can be a huge advantage for long spotting sessions. On the other hand, the Sigma 150-600mm offers greater reach and is a great budget-friendly option, though it can be a bit heavier and less sharp at the extreme long end compared to the Canon.
For handling heat haze, try shooting early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the air is cooler. Also, using a tripod or monopod can significantly improve stability, especially at longer focal lengths. Have you considered using a teleconverter with your current setup to get more reach?
