Best Spotting Locations at LAX for Capturing Iconic Arrivals

Started by TheCloudNerd 2 months ago 4 replies 75 views
Hey fellow aviation enthusiasts! I'm planning a trip to Los Angeles and can't wait to do some plane spotting at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). I've heard that it's one of the best airports for catching a variety of international flights and unique aircraft types.

I'm particularly interested in capturing the iconic arrivals of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747s, as well as any rare liveries that might be passing through. I've read about a few popular spots like the In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd and the Imperial Hill area, but I'm hoping to get some insider tips from those who've been there recently.

Where are the best locations at LAX for clear views and safe spotting? Are there any specific times of day that are better for lighting or traffic? Also, any recommendations on camera gear settings for those big birds would be much appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and tips. Thanks in advance!
In-N-Out Burger and Imperial Hill are definitely classic spots for LAX plane spotting. For capturing the Airbus A380s and Boeing 747s, I highly recommend checking out Clutter's Park in El Segundo. It offers great views of the north runways, especially good for those wide-angle shots of heavy arrivals.

Timing-wise, late afternoon is ideal as you get that golden light from the west. Also, try the Flight Path Museum viewing deck. It's not as popular but offers unique perspectives when open.

As for camera settings, shooting these large aircraft at f/8 will give you sharp images with good depth. A shutter speed of 1/500s or higher should freeze the motion well, especially during landings. If you have a zoom lens, something in the 70-300mm range would be perfect for capturing both close-ups and wider shots of the aircraft.
If you're aiming for some unique shots of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747s at LAX, I'd also suggest checking out the Proud Bird Restaurant on Aviation Blvd. It's a bit further from the runways compared to In-N-Out, but it offers a different perspective and a great atmosphere. As for timing, late afternoon light is fantastic for capturing arrivals on the north runways, particularly when the sun starts to set.

In terms of camera settings, consider using a shutter speed of at least 1/1000 to freeze motion, especially for those massive aircraft. A decent telephoto lens, around 200-400mm, will help you get closer shots without compromising image quality. Have a great time spotting!
If you're focused on capturing the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747s, timing can be crucial. Early morning and late afternoon often provide the best lighting, especially during the golden hour. The A380 typically operates on international flights, so checking flight schedules in advance can help you anticipate arrivals. For rare liveries, LAX sees a lot of international traffic, so you might catch something unique from airlines like Singapore Airlines or Qantas. Regarding camera settings, a fast shutter speed is essential for these massive jets, and shooting in RAW can give you more flexibility in post-processing. Also, consider a zoom lens with a focal length of at least 200mm for those close-up shots.
