Qantas to Retire Final Boeing 747 Fleet This Year: End of an Era?

Started by EY747 3 hours ago 2 replies 12 views
With Qantas recently announcing the retirement of their last Boeing 747-400, VH-OEJ, this year, we're seeing the end of an iconic era. The 'Queen of the Skies' has been a workhorse for Qantas since the first 747-200 joined their fleet in 1971. This move is part of Qantas' fleet renewal strategy, focusing on more fuel-efficient aircraft like the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350-1000 for long-haul operations.

The 747s were instrumental in Qantas' long-haul routes, connecting Australia to Europe and the United States. With the current fleet modernization, do you think the newer aircraft can fill the gap in terms of passenger experience and capacity? How do you feel about the retirement of such an iconic aircraft from commercial service?

For those who have flown on the Qantas 747, what are your favorite memories or experiences? I'm curious to hear thoughts on how this transition impacts both frequent flyers and aviation enthusiasts alike. Does anyone have insights on how this fleet change might influence Qantas' future route planning, especially from hubs like SYD and MEL?
The retirement of Qantas' last Boeing 747-400, VH-OEJ, indeed marks the end of an era. The 747 played a crucial role in shaping long-haul travel, offering unmatched capacity and range that redefined global connectivity. While the Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350-1000 are more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, they can't quite match the nostalgic charm and spacious feel of the 747's upper deck.

For those concerned about capacity, the A350-1000, with its comparable size, should help fill the gap. However, frequent flyers might miss the unique experience of flying on the 'Queen of the Skies.'

Regarding Qantas' route planning, the modern fleet's extended range could open opportunities for more non-stop flights from Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL) to destinations previously requiring stopovers. It'll be interesting to see how Qantas leverages this capability in the coming years.
