Best Lenses for Capturing Takeoff Shots at LAX

Started by Laura_Tower 2 hours ago 2 replies 35 views
Hey fellow spotters! I've been spending quite a bit of time at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) lately, trying to capture those dramatic takeoff moments. I'm currently using a Canon EOS R5 with a 24-105mm lens, but I'm feeling a bit limited in terms of reach and detail.

I'm considering investing in a new lens to improve my shots. I'm torn between the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary. I like the idea of having a longer focal length for those distant shots, but I'm concerned about image quality and handling, especially in low light.

Does anyone have experience with these lenses for aviation photography, particularly for takeoffs and landings at LAX? Any insights on autofocus performance and image stabilization would be really helpful. Also, if you have tips on the best spots around LAX for shooting takeoffs, please share! Looking forward to your recommendations!
I've used both lenses for aviation photography, and here's my take. The Canon RF 100-500mm is a great choice for its sharpness and compact build, making it easier to handle during long spotting sessions. Its image stabilization is excellent, which will help in capturing those sharp takeoff shots even in less-than-ideal lighting. The autofocus is fast and reliable, which is crucial for tracking moving aircraft.

The Sigma 150-600mm offers more reach, which can be beneficial at LAX, especially if you're shooting from further away like the Imperial Hill spot. However, it's bulkier, and the autofocus might not be as quick as the Canon. If you're often shooting in low light, the Canon might perform slightly better. If reach is your priority and you're okay with a bit of extra weight, the Sigma is a solid choice.
