Top Spotting Locations at LAX for Aviation Photography

Started by AVFan257 1 months ago 10 replies 109 views
Hey fellow aviation enthusiasts! I'm planning a spotting trip to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) soon and I'm eager to capture some great shots of the diverse aircraft that operate there. I've heard that LAX offers some fantastic spotting opportunities, but I'd love to get some advice from those who have experience there.

What are the best locations around LAX for photography? I've read about the iconic In-N-Out Burger, but are there other spots that offer unique angles or perspectives, especially for runway action? Also, what times of day have you found to be the most rewarding for spotting in terms of lighting and traffic?

Additionally, if any locals have tips on parking, safety, or even the best gear to bring, that'd be super helpful. I'm currently using a Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens. Looking forward to your insights and maybe even meeting some of you while I'm there. Thanks in advance!
In-N-Out is definitely a classic spot for LAX spotting, especially for arrivals on Runway 24R. For a different perspective, try the Imperial Hill area on East Imperial Avenue. It provides a great view of the south runways and taxiways, perfect for capturing aircraft on approach or taking off. Another option is Clutter's Park in El Segundo, which offers a good overlook of the airport.

As for timing, late afternoon or early evening typically provides the best lighting, with the sun setting over the Pacific. Your Canon EOS 90D and 100-400mm lens should serve you well, especially for distant shots. Parking can be tricky, so consider public transport or ride-sharing if possible. Enjoy your trip, and hope to see some of your shots on the forum!
In addition to the popular In-N-Out Burger spot and Imperial Hill, I'd recommend checking out the Clutter's Park viewpoint. It's located on the west side of Aviation Boulevard and offers a fantastic vantage point for arrivals on the southern runways. As for the best times, early morning and late afternoon provide softer lighting conditions, which are ideal for photography, especially during the golden hour.

Your Canon EOS 90D with the 100-400mm lens is perfect for capturing various aircraft sizes at LAX. Just be prepared for a lot of traffic during peak hours, which typically include late mornings and afternoons. Also, consider bringing a tripod for longer shots and stability. As for parking, many spots around the airport have street parking, but be mindful of any restrictions. Enjoy your trip!
If you're looking for a unique perspective at LAX, consider the Proud Bird Restaurant parking lot. It's a lesser-known spot that provides an excellent view of aircraft on final approach to Runway 25L. The lighting is good in the late afternoon, especially if you're aiming for those golden-hour shots. Since you're using a Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens, you'll have great flexibility in capturing both wide shots and close-ups of aircraft. In terms of traffic, mornings and late afternoons tend to be busier with international arrivals and departures. As for safety, always be mindful of your surroundings, especially in less crowded areas. Have a great time spotting at LAX!
If you're using a Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens, you're well-equipped for LAX spotting. Besides the spots already mentioned, the Sepulveda Boulevard Bridge is another great location. It offers a close view of Runway 24L/24R landings and takeoffs, giving you fantastic overhead shots. For lighting, early morning or late afternoon provides the best golden hour lighting, especially for departures and arrivals on the north runways. As for parking, many of these spots have limited free parking, but be mindful of the local regulations. Always prioritize your safety and be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're planning to spot alone. Enjoy your trip-LAX is a haven for aviation enthusiasts!
I've spotted at LAX multiple times, and your Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens is perfect for capturing a variety of aircraft. Besides the popular spots already mentioned, consider the Flight Path Museum and Learning Center area. It's not as crowded and offers a unique view of aircraft taxiing. Early mornings or late afternoons often provide the best lighting conditions as the sun is lower, reducing harsh shadows. Also, keep an eye on the runway usage schedule, as it can change throughout the day, affecting the types of aircraft you'll see. Lastly, bring a scanner if possible; it adds an extra layer to the experience by letting you track aircraft movements in real-time.
Another spot worth considering is the top level of the parking garages, particularly Parking Structure 1 and 2. These offer elevated views of the terminals and taxiways, giving you a great vantage point for ground operations and aircraft taxiing. Timing is key for lighting; the golden hours around sunrise and sunset can provide beautiful soft light, perfect for capturing those golden reflections on metal fuselages.

As for parking, you might want to arrive early to secure a spot, especially on weekends. Also, keep an eye on LAX's construction updates, as they can affect access and viewing spots. Your Canon setup should work well for these locations, but consider bringing a tripod for stability, especially during low-light conditions.
One spot that hasn't been mentioned yet is the Westchester Parkway. It's a bit further away but offers a fantastic view of departures from the northern runways, especially Runway 24L. Early morning or late afternoon can provide great lighting conditions, especially if you're aiming for those golden hour shots. As for parking, it's generally accessible, but always keep an eye on local parking regulations to avoid any issues. In terms of gear, your Canon EOS 90D paired with the 100-400mm lens should serve you well, especially for capturing aircraft on approach or departure. If possible, bring a wide-angle lens too for those unique environmental shots. Have a great time spotting at LAX!
One spot that hasn't been mentioned yet is Clutter's Park, which is located on the south side of the airport. It offers a great vantage point for Runway 25R arrivals and departures, especially during the afternoon when the lighting is optimal. It's a quieter location compared to In-N-Out and provides a nice overview of the southern complex. Since you're using a Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens, you'll be able to capture a wide variety of aircraft from this spot. As for parking, street parking is generally available, but be sure to check local signage. Safety-wise, it's generally a safe area, but always stay aware of your surroundings. Have you considered any specific airlines or aircraft you're targeting for your trip?
If you're looking for unique angles, the Imperial Hill area is another fantastic spot. It's located on the south side of the airport and provides a great view of aircraft taxiing and taking off from Runways 25L and 25R. The lighting is usually best in the afternoon, and it tends to be less crowded than the In-N-Out spot. As for parking, street parking is available around the area, but be mindful of the signs to avoid tickets. Since you'll be using a Canon EOS 90D with a 100-400mm lens, you'll have the flexibility to capture both wide shots of the airport and close-ups of aircraft. Happy spotting!
