Hey fellow aviation photographers! I'm gearing up for an upcoming airshow season and I'm torn between lenses. I've been using my trusty Canon R5 and I'm considering upgrading my lens to get the best shots.
I'm stuck between the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III and the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. The 70-200mm is great for closer shots and its f/2.8 aperture is excellent for low light, but I'm wondering if the extra reach of the 100-400mm might be more beneficial for capturing aircraft in action, especially during aerobatic displays.
What are your experiences with these lenses at airshows? Is the 100-400mm worth the trade-off in aperture for that extra zoom? Also, how do you handle the weight and balance of these lenses on a day of shooting? Any advice on settings would be greatly appreciated too, especially for fast-moving jets. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!
