Shooting at Tokyo Narita: Tips for Capturing Departures

Started by ShotsAvgeek28 4 days ago 5 replies 31 views
Hey everyone! I recently spent a day spotting at Tokyo Narita (NRT) and figured I'd share some tips for capturing departures. If you're heading there, you'll want to check out the spots near Terminal 1. I found a great location at the Sakura No Yama park, which gives a pretty clear view of aircraft taking off.

For settings, I used a Canon EOS R6 with a 100-400mm lens. The light can be tricky, especially in the afternoon with the sun overhead, so a polarizer really helps cut through some of that glare. I kept my shutter speed around 1/1000s to freeze the motion, especially with the larger jets.

Anyone else have tips for shooting at Narita? Would love to hear about other spots or settings you guys use. Also, let me know if you have experience shooting in different seasons there - I've only been in the summer. Looking forward to the tips!
Sakura No Yama park is definitely a solid spot. I was there in the spring, and the cherry blossoms add a nice touch to the photos. If you haven't tried it yet, head to the observation deck at Terminal 2 as well. It's got a good angle for takeoffs when the planes are using the longer runway. I usually shoot with a Nikon D850, and I find using a bit of exposure compensation helps, especially with the glare from the tarmac. How's the traffic in summer compared to spring?
Sakura No Yama park is great, but have you tried the view from the hill near Higashi Narita Park? It's a bit of a walk, but you get a killer angle on the runway. I usually shoot there in the fall when the leaves change-it adds a cool backdrop. For settings, I like to drop my ISO a bit and bump up the aperture to catch more detail, especially with the big birds. Anyone tried shooting in winter? Curious how the light is with the snow around.
I've shot at Narita during winter, and it's a whole different vibe. The clear skies and crisp air can really make the colors pop, but it's chilly! One spot I found interesting is the area near the Narita Airport Rest House. You get a unique view of planes taxiing before they line up for takeoff. Settings-wise, I agree with using a polarizer, but I also bump up the ISO a bit when it gets overcast, which happens a lot in winter. Anyone else have a favorite season for shooting there?
I've only shot at Narita in the fall, and the light is really nice that time of year. The foliage around the airport adds some great color to the background. I've found the observation deck at Terminal 1 can be pretty good too, especially in the late afternoon. The only downside is the glass, which can be a pain sometimes, but a rubber lens hood helps reduce reflections. Anyone ever try shooting from the Sky Gate Bridge? Curious if it's worth the trek.
