Dealing with Heat Haze at Sydney Airport

Started by Route9850 3 hours ago 2 replies 10 views
So I was out spotting at Sydney Airport (SYD) the other day and ran into some serious heat haze issues. It was a warm day, and I could see the shimmer messing with my shots, especially on the longer runway shots. Super frustrating!

I've tried a few things like shooting earlier in the day when it's cooler, but sometimes you just can't avoid shooting during the hotter times. I've heard using a higher f-stop might help, but I'm not totally sure. Has anyone else faced this at SYD or anywhere else? What tricks or settings do you guys use to minimize the haze? Would love to hear any tips or camera settings that might help me out. Thanks!
Yeah, heat haze can be a real pain. I've had similar issues at other airports too. Shooting earlier is good, but when that's not an option, I've found using a longer lens and focusing on closer subjects helps a bit. Also, try to find a spot with less tarmac between you and the plane. The heat rising from the ground is what usually causes the distortion. Haven't tried the higher f-stop trick myself, but might be worth experimenting!
