Best Lenses for Aviation Photography: 100-400mm vs 150-600mm

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my lens setup for aviation photography and I'm torn between two options: the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary. I've been shooting with a Canon EOS R5 and mostly spot at large airports like LAX and JFK, where I have opportunities for both close-up and distant shots.

I'm particularly interested in hearing your experiences and recommendations on these lenses. How do they perform in terms of sharpness, autofocus speed, and overall usability for fast-moving subjects? Is the extra reach of the 150-600mm worth the potential trade-offs in weight and portability? Also, any tips on handling heat haze and maintaining image quality at longer focal lengths would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your insights and experiences. Thanks for the advice!
I've used both lenses for plane spotting, and each has its strengths. The Canon RF 100-400mm is more compact and lighter, making it easier to handle for long periods, which is great for an entire day at the airport. Its autofocus is quick, and the image stabilization is impressive, especially for handheld shots. However, the Sigma 150-600mm offers that extra reach, which can be invaluable for distant aircraft or capturing details like engine nacelles and landing gear. It is heavier, so a monopod or tripod might be necessary for extended use.

Regarding heat haze, shooting earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when temperatures are lower can help reduce distortion. Also, try to shoot with the sun behind you for better image clarity. Have you considered renting each lens to test them in your typical shooting conditions before making a decision?
