Boeing 777-9 Delays - What's Taking So Long?

Started by HA757 6 days ago 2 replies 31 views
Hey everyone, just read that the Boeing 777-9 is stuck in Phase 4A of the FAA certification process. Can you believe it might not be ready for commercial flights until 2027? That's a long delay considering it was supposed to be flying years ago!

I get that getting certified is no joke, but I wonder what specific challenges they're facing this time. Is it just the usual technical hurdles, or do you think there are other issues at play? I've heard it's already taken 14 years since they first launched this type - seems like forever!

The 777-9 was supposed to be a big leap forward for long-haul flights with its improved efficiency and capacity. I guess airlines that were counting on it are just gonna have to wait a bit longer.

Anyone have more insight on what's holding things up? And do you think this delay will impact the airlines' plans or the competition with Airbus? Would love to hear your thoughts!
Yeah, it's nuts how long it's taking. I think part of the delay is Boeing being extra careful after the 737 MAX fiasco. They can't afford another mess-up with safety. Plus, the pandemic threw a wrench into everything, slowing down production and testing. And those new GE9X engines are a beast on their own, so probably more complex than they anticipated. Airlines must be frustrated, especially with Airbus pushing the A350. Do you think Boeing's delays will make airlines lean more towards Airbus in the future?
