Shooting at Cape Town Airport - Best Spots and Gear?

Started by SAN320Hunter 5 days ago 2 replies 36 views
Hey folks, I'm planning a trip to Cape Town International (CPT) soon, and I'm hoping to get some great shots of the aircraft there. I've never been, so I'm not sure where to start. Anyone have tips for the best spotting locations at CPT? Also, would love to hear what gear you recommend for this airport. I'm currently using a Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm lens but thinking of renting something with a bit more reach, maybe a 70-300mm. Not sure how close the spots are to the runway. Any advice would be awesome. Plus, if you've got any tips on dealing with lighting there, since I've heard it can get pretty bright, that'd be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
I was at CPT last year. The viewing deck in the domestic terminal is pretty solid for spotting, but it can get crowded. For better shots, try the area near the runway on Michigan Street. It's a bit of a walk but worth it. Your 24-120mm might be limiting, so a 70-300mm is a good call. Lighting can be harsh, especially in the afternoon. A polarizing filter helps a ton with reducing glare.
