Best Camera Settings for Night Shots at Tokyo Narita (NRT)?

Started by JonathanMCO38 2 days ago 5 replies 24 views
Hey folks, I've been trying my hand at some night photography at Tokyo Narita (NRT) and could use some advice. I'm shooting with a Nikon D750 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I love the look of those well-lit planes against the dark skies, but I'm struggling to get the clarity and sharpness I want.

I've been experimenting with different ISO settings, but I keep getting noise in my shots. Also, any tips on shutter speed and aperture settings would be awesome. Should I be using a tripod all the time? Any specific spots at NRT that have good lighting or angles?

If anyone's got some experience shooting there at night or has some pro tips, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
Definitely use a tripod. It's a game-changer for night shots. For your Nikon D750, start with ISO around 800 or 1600 to reduce noise. Try aperture at f/4 to f/5.6 to get more depth of field and a sharper image. Shutter speed can be tricky, but about 1/30s to 1/60s is a good start. As for spots, the observation deck is popular, but it can be crowded. Keep an eye on security, they might be strict about tripods in some areas.
Try keeping your ISO as low as possible to cut down on noise. A tripod's pretty much essential for night shots, so you've got that right. For shutter speed, experiment with longer exposures-maybe start around 1/15s and adjust as needed. You might want to play with f/2.8 to keep the background blurred and focus on the plane. As for spots, the observation deck in Terminal 1 has some decent lighting. Just gotta watch for reflections off the glass.
I'd definitely stick with the tripod. It's a must for night shots. For ISO, maybe try 400 or 800 to cut down on noise. You can always clean it up a bit in post-processing. Shutter speed-wise, you might want to go for longer exposures, like 1/30 or slower, depending on the lighting. Aperture around f/4 sounds good to me. Also, try spotting near Terminal 1's observation deck. Good views there, especially when planes are taxiing.
Definitely use a tripod. Makes a big difference for night shots. For ISO, try sticking around 400 or 800 to reduce noise. If you're still getting noise, it might help to use noise reduction software in post. For aperture, maybe start at f/4 for a balance between sharpness and depth of field. Shutter speed can vary, but longer exposures can really bring out those night details. Haven't been to NRT myself, but I've heard the observation decks offer some solid views and lighting. Ever tried shooting from there?
