USAF's Tanker Trouble: KC-46 Pegasus Not Keeping Up?

Started by Wings9438 5 days ago 2 replies 19 views
So, I was reading about how the USAF is having some trouble with their tanker fleet. They've retired all their KC-10 Extenders, which is kind of a big deal because those were workhorses. Now they're relying on the old KC-135Rs and the newer KC-46 Pegasus. But apparently, the KC-46 isn't meeting all the demands they created themselves.

I mean, the USAF has like 75% of the world's tankers, which is massive. But if the KC-46 can't keep up, that could be a problem for their global operations. Especially since the KC-135R isn't getting any younger.

I'm curious about the KC-46. Why isn't it able to keep up? Is it technical issues or maybe they just need more of them? Also, what do you guys think this means for the USAF's ability to project power globally? Seems like a pretty important part of their strategy.

Would love to hear your thoughts on how they might handle this situation or if anyone knows more about the issues with the KC-46.
The KC-46 has had a rough start with tech issues like the remote vision system for refueling, which has been a headache. Plus, they're still ramping up production, so maybe they just need more time to meet demand. The KC-135s are solid but definitely aging, so the USAF needs the KC-46 to step up soon. If they can't sort this out, it could limit their global reach. I wonder if they'll speed up the KC-Y program as a backup plan.
